So like, recently I've been getting back into playing roblox stuff and unironically I've seen some big discussions about game dev in there and one thing and on thing only that I've seen discussed the most is... wood
at first I was like "that's stupid, who will pay attention to wood in a roblox game", granted, the grand majority of people talk bout' this say something along this lines, but once I checked it give the games that uses wood a more polished look and it's generally nice to look at, and the one guy that I can pinpoint as THE wood guy is Wood Reviewer on twitter, he is the most vocal about this topic, hell I can say that he is basically the jesus christ of wood textures on roblox
so I wanted to do something simillar to his blogs about the topic to see if I can see and understand what makes a good wood texture on roblox (or wood grain, idk the difference T-T)
WHAT MAKES GOOD WOOD?
as far I know right, good wood grain is the ones where the woof flows all into one way, say if the wood grain goes right to left, the all sides go right to left, same thing if it goes from down to up
(now come my fave part :3)
FORSAKEN'S WOOD INSPECTION
so to kinda do something very similar to woodgrain reviewer's blogs, I wanted to inspect forsaken (my current fixiation as of rn) to see how good it does :3, and it all starts with
The Lobby
I got this idea very late at night so I am sorry if you can't see shit T-T, but we start... bad, very bad, the lobby looks good don't get me wrong, but once you inspect more in detail, you can notice a ton of bad wood grain
for example, in this screenshot the mini pillars of the railing is not going upwards, therefore making it unpleasant to look at, but there's more in the lobby that one does not notice at face value but it's very noticeable once you see it
(specially this guy, he thought he was slick sitting in the chair looking all innocent)
but yeah, not a very good look for the game as of right now, but thanks to this game being heavily inspired by dead by daylight, there's more maps to look at so let's jump straight to...
Planet Voss
Planet Voss is based by another game named "Planet Voss: Gateway Park" on roblox which was uploaded in 2008 by the user "Koopa", making the textures not use wood, so what did the forsaken team did for the map???
exactly that lol, which one could say that the approach is lazy at best, the theming is good, as you are playing litteraly in the same map in one degree (remember, the map is edited enough so it fun to play in) so thanks to that you get threes that look like this :p
which is good cuz it makes the map feel more like the original creator envisioned it
Yorick's Resting Place
This map is very much the same map of the same name uploaded by roblox themselves for the halloween event of 2008 :p, which again, talking about how people (even roblox themselves) managed textures at the time, is not looking good for this map
but for the most part in where wood is used, the forsaken team chose to go for a more plastic look for, like planet voss, so this map is safe (for what I could find)
The End
so that's the lobby and 2 maps that I looked into, I would have gone through the whole map roster, buuuut, I ran out of pictures to upload, so maybe I do a new post continuing this little thing I got going on once new maps come though, so yea that's the end of this not so little blog post
have a good morning, day and/or night
